THE TAJ BURROW COLLECTION:

Designed specifically with input and feedback from world tour veteran and high performance surfing icon, Taj Burrow. This collaboration/collection stems from the work done to satisfy TBs needs for his trademark brand of razor sharp and explosive, cutting edge competitive and free surfing. With two World Tour wins (Snapper Rocks and Steamer Lane) in our first full season (2012) of working together, the results more than speak for themselves.

WHIPLASH X Taj

Using the classic “Whiplash” model as a starting point, this board has now become the most refined and streamlined design in our line. Based of of TBs winning board from the 2012 Quiksilver Pro (Snapper Rocks) it is relatively low volume board , with continuous rocker (to fit where ever TB wants to go on the wave) and deep concaves (for lift and the speed to get there ). A relaxed central rocker maintains speed and carry through the flats, while hyper-extended tail kick in the last 16” and a moderately lifted nose keep the board free, loose and responsive. The outline also has an aggressive, continuous curve , cutting out all the unneeded surface area, thus no hip or bump in front of the fins that most of our boards feature. The nose, while not as needle or narrow as in the past, is still pulled enough to not get in the way of TBs fast and critical, tight radius turns. Although not for everyone, this board is relatively easy to ride and is best for younger and fit surfers who are above average, have no problem creating their own speed, and surf regularly in punchy beach or decent quality point breaks and want to surf as critical and radical as possible.

THE BEACH BUGGY…BY Taj

Derived from the Whiplash-TB. The TB-Stepdown is more of an “every-mans” high performance shortboard. Used by many WT and Qualifying Series competitors, because it works equally well in small junk surf. Featuring the Same WL-TB, hyper extended tail rocker (for tight radius arcs off the back foot) but a significantly more relaxed entry rocker, which combined with a wider nose allows for more drive and forward momentum , and stability, with a bigger landing platform from reverse and tweaked airs. A wider hip and tail block is added to the outline in the tail for more lift at low speeds, but the tail width at 12” is relatively the same as the WL- TB. This allows for superior precision and control than most al other “grovel” boards. With the centerline and rail volume is carried farther into the rails….and out to nose and tail the TB-stepdown is designed to be ridden 1-2” shorter than the WLashTB. In the right size, this is a HP shortboard that can be ridden and enjoyed by most surfers of average to above average ability…not just for skinny kids and pros.

SUB-SCORCHER II

A fresh twist to the extremely popular Sub Scorcher. I started making squash tail versions of this one just for friends and a lot of WQS warrior/team riders, and it then gained popularity among the So- Cal custom order crew simply by word of mouth. The premise is simple: We removed all off the Sub-Scorchers trademark ¼”vee from the last 6” of the tail (we increasing the rocker about 1/8” and lowering the rail-line 1/8”). This loosens up the board, to better allow a more vertical and in the pocket attack. At the same time to counter any possible loss of drive we straightened the outline with a touch wider nose. We have played with a myriad of tail shapes. DW-Swallow: The straight lines of the tails adds drive and the swallow adds bite in turns. Diamond: Julian’s choice for more precision turning on his 5’7” 19.25” 2.32” and even a “Butt” tail for Kolohe’s 5’6” 19.50 2.32”. Overwhelmingly positive feedback from the two above mentioned surfers was the major inspiration in releasing this latest incarnation of the Sub-Scorcher. The overall volume is similar to the original, but the thickness flow has been held further forward to allow it to be ridden very short. All these subtle changes ad up make to a board that features extremely effective use of rocker, foil and rail line in a small package. In spite of the Pros being so involved in the development of this design, it is actually a great “everyman’s” small to average wave short-board, with a relatively pulled in/pointed nose, in place of full nose hybrid or traditional fish type design.

THE DOMESTICATED SERIES:

It happens to most of us. We spend our younger years rallying against anything that stands in front of us, running rampant and causing chaos. Surf all day, rage all night and to hell with the consequences. But then society and, to some degree, conformity grab hold and tame our wild ways. Responsibilities rear and priorities pile up. Water time drops down, waist sizes inch up and life settles in. When you do get in the water, the last thing you need is more work, more grief and difficulty. Precious time in the brine should be fun and easy. It shouldn’t add to lifes stresses and struggles. To help make every hard earned and precious session a success, we bring you the “Domesticated Series”: Generous volume boards designed for having a good time… in your free time, and free you from the drudgery of every day dealings. Minimalistic curves and design elements that allow you to capitalize on and control that extra volume to your advantage, both in the line up, and most importantly, on the wave….translating into higher waves counts without sacrificing surfing performance on those waves. That’s what The Domestic Series is all about ...good times, fun and easy.

THE LAY Z BOY

Both a continuation and break away from the Plank/Bottom Feeder genre of alternative, fun yet performance minded, surfboards. The LayZboy takes these high volume/low rocker and neutral bottom curves small wave surfboard designs to a wider range of waves and a more versatile and diverse playing field. Using an elliptical , “double ender” influenced outline, the LayZboy is inspired by the boards ridden by guys like Wayne Lynch and Michael Peterson in the 1970’s…as well as Dave Parmenter in the 80’s and 90’s . These elliptical, continuous curve, outlines combined with our proven rocker and bottom curves from the Bottom Feeder and Plank series, create a board that has a very open and forgiving sweet spot (as far as foot placement goes) and can be ridden in waves from knee high to well over head with ease. Because of the narrow hipped, continuous curve, elliptical outlines, you can surf this with a centered stance for down the line 70’s inspired speed runs, down carves and cutbacks…. or step back on the tail and go vertical off the bottom and in the pocket. The bottom contours (mostly flat rail to rail, with rolled, soft edges and a spiral vee under the rear foot) neutralize the high volume and free the board up, making it easy to push and permeate the rail deep and perpendicular into the face of waves…..rather than skate flat on top of the water. Paddling? What do you expect….like a Cadillac.

THE COUCH POTATO

Designed in conjunction with the LayZboy, The Couch Potato in the extreme small wave version of the same general concept. It is wider, shorter, with a flatter rocker and a more parallel, yet continuously curving, outline than its big brother. Designed specifically a small wave surfboard, The Couch Potato (CP) is essentially a grovel version of the LayZboy, with a noticeably wider nose , with less entry rocker and a fuller forward foil, combined with a slightly wider tail. The outline and rocker combine for a board that is crazy fast , yet still controllable and maneuverable, in gutless surf. A waist high weapon that, like the LayZboy, can be surfed equally effective from both a centered stance or off the tail. Recommend to be ridden 2” shorter than the LayZBoy or the same size as Plank or Bottom Feeder.

V2-STUB

A wider, thicker, flatter, fatter, fuller, faster, floatier, funner, freakishly fantastic prodgetic-ly paddling stepdown version of the V2 Rocket. The nose is flat, full and wide, the Rocker is lower overall and volume is generously distributed further into the rails and farther out to the nose and tail; So ride it a couple inches shorter, and a good ½ wider, than a Rocket or V2 to get that great “Rocket” feeling in even smaller, more crowded junky waves. Shown here in “E- Technologies” EPS and SuperSap Epoxy, with mosaic bamboo inlay deck and resin tint bottom. All V2 Stubs are designed with 5 fin options.

The Rocket V2

The V2 has a bit less tail rocker, with less concave through he fins which creates a faster rail line under foot. I actually deepened the concave out of the tail as well. The soft wing helps retain of the quick redirection off the top n bottom..and lend more control in the bowl. To tell the truth, I have moved the points of the diamond up a bit and made the angle closer to the Stealth tail, but haven’t finalized this 100%.

The nose rocker is bent up more in the last 12″ (to balance the lower TR and keep from poking) and the concave is brought further forward (to compensate for more NR and also further elongating the rail line for more front foot drive) and help with even faster out the gate take rides.

The tail rail is sculpted in a more pronounced way, adding a touch of double concave under the rear foot, as well as a low, square and boxy tail rail. I also made the nose a touch wider in the 12-18′ mark.

Overall a easier board to ride for an average surfer in sub-par waves. it has more down the line drive and a bit less skateboard kick tail feel.

The Rocket was one of the most popular boards around the world in the last 5 years…one of the most well known and knocked off surfboard models in recent memory. It obviously has merit and worked well for thousands of surfers, but there is always room for improvement. I used the feedback from the average joe to update and refine what was not broken.

The original Rocket will always be available from us as well. This doesn’t replace the Rocket, it compliments it.

The Mini Driver

While preparing a quiver for an Indo trip Kolohe asked for “a short, fast (flat rockered) little 5 fin tube rider”. I recommended the Rock-Up, but he felt it had more tail rocker than he liked and wanted something really, really fast the he could take off extremely deep and pump through tubes from way back. We started with a 6’0” Driver, took note of the nose rocker and outline measurements at 4” and 16” back from the tip, then shrunk the board to a 5’8” and lowered the nose rocker at the tip and 12” back till it matched the 4” and 16” from before. We widened the nose until it matched up the same way. This gave us a screaming fast low nose rocker with a forward placed outline, both attributes give tons of drive. We then rounded off the tail, but left the width at 12” the same. This gave us a very clean and elliptical outline that we expected would move free and easy inside the tube. The Mini Driver performed as hoped. Interestingly enough, one of Kolohe’s buddies (Taylor Clark) grabbed it after it came back from Indo and used it in the US Nationals event in Huntington Beach. He surfed it in 2’ slop all the way to a second place finish in the Open Men’s division. The board worked in everything.

The Bottom Feeder

Our latest board design for riding the smallest waves possible. A board that feeds and thrives off the bottom end of the wave spectrum. I was feeling held back a bit by the wide noses on the Plank and Uber-Plank, and wanted to make a board with more outline curve and no wings, something more elliptical. This board has a lower entry rocker than I have ever done and uses rolled belly to keep it from catching. The belly continues through the center but features a double concave sitting inside it. Which creates a tri-plane hull featuring a soft chine in the rail. This feeds water through the hull and gives it a feeling closer to a concave bottom board. The tail features enough rail rocker and hip to allow aggressive direction changes in tiny surf without losing speed. A am feeling outlines that are more and more clean, with less wings and fancy, trendy tail shapes. This board showcases that concept. It’s designed as a quad, but it can be made a 5 fin as well. I prefer it with Future Fin boxes and fiberglass “controller” fins.

The Driver

Surfboard trends tend to move in circles. The last few years have been highlighted by a move toward shorter, wider, higher volume surfboards.Because of shapers melding these elements, with creative combinations of rocker, foil, bottom contours and fin clusters, the everyday surfer has benefitted dramatically. But what’s next? In the end, we feel it comes back to a user friendly, high performance, modern shortboard. A shortboard that isn’t impossible to jump onto after riding a stubby hybrid everyday for a month… doesn’t feel long or stiff, or paddle like an Alia. A short board that works in everything from 2’ mush to 6’ grinders. The Driver…Developed when one of the bigger, more powerful, yet still new school, surfers on tour came looking for something special for the California contest season. The design concept wasn’t new, but the resulting board is. Defined by a long, straight rocker through the middle of the board that then lifts to a healthy nose rocker (so the board redirects when put on a rail) and a low, but curvy tail rocker that’s moved way back under the rear foot (for quick turns in tight sections). The same goes for the outline: It’s long and straight through the middle (netting a wider than average nose and rear hip area, allowing it to be ridden close to traditional shortboard widths with a lot of curve from just in front of the fins, through the tail. The wide point is pushed further back, creating a turning fulcrum between the feet. These elements, combined with a flattish deck line, full rails and a thickness flow that holds volume into the tips, nets a board that glides through flats, holds long arcing carves and still snaps in the pocket. Unlike any other board in our line and is not only being quickly adopted by top team riders pros looking for something new, but we honestly feel that the Driver is the board that can get us all back onto a modern High Performance thruster shortboard. Recommended to be ridden close to typical shortboard dims, with higher volume than normal due to the design.

The Sub Driver

The Sub Driver is something Kolohe Andino specifically asked for this spring. Most his small or mushy wave surfing had been on 5’10 x 18.88 x 2.25 Sub Scorchers. In solid or curvy, more powerful waves he has been riding his 6’0 x 18.25 x 2.25 squash tail Drivers. He asked for to make him something in between his “Driver with a Sub Scorcher outline”. Using the AKU shaping program I simply imported the Sub Scorcher’s outline onto the Driver rocker, bottom, foil and rails. We then sized it just between the Sub Scorcher and his Driver at 5’11 x 18.75 x 2.25. The result is a board he’s been riding in all sorts of waves from knee high San Clemente beach breaks to fun sized Indo. We came up with a cool new logo and rushed this model into the US stores for summer 2011. More nose rocker and less tail rocker (with no vee) than the Sub Scorcher. This is a great all around small to mid sized wave board for both average and exceptional surfers. Early response has been fantastic. Mick Fanning rode one of Kolohe’s 5’11 Sub Driver trade-ins into the quarter-finals (he lost on a count back) of the Hurley Pro at Trestles this year.

Scorcher

Kolohe’s all around small to average wave contest board is also the most popular HP short board in our line. His trademark carving style is based around this rocker, outline and rails. The SCORCHER features the same low entry rocker, forward outline and rear rail line rocker of the Stealth, but with the wide bump squash, low stringer centerline rocker and Vee out the back from the SD2. The deep Vee out the tail allows more full rail carving and drive. Kolohe has used this model to win countless national and US surfing titles, as well as his first few Pro events already. This board is already the rage amongst the custom order crew. Ride about 2″ shorter 1/8″ thinner and 1/4″ wider than an F1 or Whiplash type short board.

Sub-Scorcher

“I wanna board for 1′ mush. Something really short and wide, but still a short board…..something like Danes board.” –Kolohe Andino

The challenged was laid down. Starting with an old SD2: We squashed the dims to 5’5″x18.63″x 2.13″, lowered the entry rocker and shallowed the concave through the center to straighten the rail line for drive and make it easier to lay such a wide platform over on a rail. “Viola!” Our stubbiest short board yet, but it still carves like a real board. Kolohe wanted to call it “The Trashcan Lid” because you don’t need to go dumpster diving to get one of these!
